One of the leading European institutions in the field of design promotion, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has acted as an intermediary between industry, business and designers since 1954, organising high prestige competitions such as the red dot design affording design oriented companies the opportunity of comparing performance and quality on an international level. With 4,165 participants the red dot design award is the largest design competition in Germany, establishing its award world-wide as one of the most desired quality labels for good design.
The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and its red dot design museum are housed in one of the most impressive industrial buildings of the 20th century, the Boiler House of the former Zollverein XII colliery in Essen which was remodelled for the purpose by the British architect Sir Norman Foster. Since 2002 Zollverein is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
The range of design promotion activities divert from trade fair presentations, conventions, seminars and workshops, e.g. the ICSID conference on “Design Promotion in the Context of Business Goals and Cultural Challenge” or the extended vocational training “A Bit ahead” on information design. Recent projects included the `Designtag NRW´ on 5 December 2002, which offers entrepreneurs, designers and design advisers the opportunity to discuss design matters and exchange experiences at an exhibition forum as well as in workshops.
The participation of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in programmes of the European Union such as IST (Information Society Technology) and Culture 2000 enables the implementation of design activities as a cultural phenomenon as well as a technological tool. The Design Zentrum is involved in projects like Multimedia Assets for Industrial Design (MAID), Computer Hybrid Intelligent Products and Services (CHIPS), European Design Network (EDN) and European Design Forum (EDF).
