The symposium is part of the three-year (2002-2005) European project, European Design Forum (EDF), co-financed by the European Commission, Culture 2000 Programme and supported by the Assessorato alle Politiche Comunitarie and Assessorato alla Cultura of the Comune di Verona.

The primary scope of the EDF project is to encourage the confrontation ov various experiences of the member countries in the field of design, through the organization of highly-specialized conferences and the creation of a constantly evolving Internet site in which the data acquired are united.

The EDF project is a dynamic platform for the exchange of knowledge within Europe in the area of design, in the most general sense of the term, from the historical and cultural aspects to the economic and technical ones.

This symposium constitutes the synthesis of the work undertaken in the forums that have been held as part of the EDF project and offers an opening to possible future endeavours.

Each of the five symposium sessions is organized by a partner in the European network and focuses on a theme already addressed in a preparatory forum held in the respective organizer's country.

The Museo di Castelvecchio is responsible for the introduction, conclusions, and overall organization of the symposium.
